I've been debating what to do above the sofa and have narrowed it down to three possibilities. So, I thought I'd put them out here and get your feedback on which you think would be best -- or perhaps there's another option you have that I haven't considered?
First, how it currently looks...let's keep it 100 shall we?
Well, let's keep it 90 because I did move some things out of the way before taking the picture. Yes, this is how my living room currently looks - I won't even show you what's out of frame just to the left and right. Things don't just come together overnight folks...or in a month...at least not for me. Clearly.
Anyways, let's talk about what's going on in the photo before I talk about my ideas for what to put over the sofa. The sofa. My craigslist find. I heart it. I love the shape and it's super comfortable. I can't wait to get it reupholstered in a solid fabric (probably a gray cotton velvet) but that is still some time away. The pillows are place holders and they will also change - I'm going to have my friend Dee make some pillows for me from the mudcloth I bought in NYC earlier this year and mix them with some solids. The table on the right is an Eileen Gray side table my sister bought me a few years ago for my birthday and the basket underneath is filled with some saved magazines for easy browsing. The tripod lamp on the left may or may not stay in that corner; I'm undecided. I do have the lampshade for it but right now I like the look of the ginormous clear g40 bulb I put in it. The Persian rug......that Persian rug. I adore it. I adore it so much I haven't put my old coffee table on it because I don't want to cover any of the pattern. At some point I'll add in my old coffee table or buy a new one but for now I like the openess of it. The large canvas leaning on the right wall I created for my old apartment - it actually hung above the sofa - but it's not the right piece for this space.
Now, let's talk about what to do over the sofa because that wall is looking pretty darn bare.
Option 1: A Gallery Wall
I, like most people?, like a good gallery wall. I particularly like gallery walls that are composed of photographs and stuff - not just photographs. Pros: Good looking. A good way to get a lot of photographs and a few keepsakes up on the wall. Interesting. Cons: My Persian rug is "busy" and I plan on creating a gallery wall around the TV (like this) which will go on the wall to the left (where the lamp is) - so adding another gallery wall might be too much?
Option 2: One oversized photograph
Almost on the extreme opposite end of a gallery wall - one oversized black and white photograph. Pros: Simple. Good looking. Statement. Cons: ???
Option 3: Two large vertical complimentary photographs
I just like this look. Kinda like Option 2 but...you know, with two photographs instead of one. Pros: Simple. Good looking. Statement. Cons: ???
So what do you think? Option 1, 2, or 3? Or something else?
